ArcSaber 2i: Yonex Japan’s made-in-Japan beginner ArcSaber, listed 2015–2022

A Japan-made starter ArcSaber

The ArcSaber 2i (item code ARC2I) was Yonex Japan’s entry-level ArcSaber for more than seven years, a 3U racquet made in Japan in Black/Orange. Yonex Japan’s one line for it read: “CS Carbon Nanotube achieves high control that holds up in rallies” (「CSカーボンナノチューブ」が、ラリーで粘る高いコントロール性を実現). It was a Japan-market model: Yonex’s international ArcSaber lists of the period do not show it.

Due in February 2015

Yonex Japan’s product page, online by February 9, 2015, announced it as a new product due for release in mid-February 2015 (2015年2月中旬発売予定), priced at ¥12,000 before tax. Yonex Japan lists a carbon frame with cup-stacked carbon nanotube, a carbon shaft and a built-in T-joint, 10 mm longer than standard, with Isometric, the Aero+Box shape, Solid Feel Core and the Control Support Cap among its technologies. It recommended 17–22 lb. Yonex Japan’s pages give no flex rating for it.

For beginners, with no named player

Yonex names no player for the 2i. Its suitability grid rated it best for beginner men and women and suitable for intermediates, with no mark for advanced players.

One design for seven years

Yonex Japan showed the same Black/Orange design, the same 3U class (average 88 g) and grips 5 and 6 on its pages of 2015, 2016 and 2022. The ArcSaber 4DX, which Yonex listed outside Japan from February 2015, was also Black/Orange and 3U, but Yonex documents it as a stiff, Taiwan-made frame with NANOAIR SPRING; Yonex never ties the two. The i-Slash (ARC-IS) is a different model despite the similar letter. Each has its own page.

On Yonex Japan’s list, 2015–2022

Yonex Japan’s racquet list of March 2015 shows the 2i beside the ArcSaber 11, 9 FL, 7, FB and i-Slash. By October 2018 and still in April 2021 the list held only two ArcSabers, the 11 and the 2i, and in May 2022 it showed the 2i beside the new ArcSaber 11 Pro. The list of February 2023 no longer includes it, and Yonex published no production end, so 2022 is the last year a Yonex list documents it on sale. Its product-page balance gauge sits on even. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Name mix-ups, not fakes

No counterfeit of the ArcSaber 2i is documented. The 2024 export ArcSaber 2 Ability, Clear and Feel are unrelated racquets, and strung “ArcSaber Light 2i” frames sold by retailers have no known Yonex source. The ARC2I code, the Japan marking and the Black/Orange design identify Yonex Japan’s 2i.

A long-running entry model

The 2i stayed on Yonex Japan’s list through two ArcSaber generations, from the carbon-nanotube era to the 2022 ArcSaber 11 Pro. For a player it is a made-in-Japan first ArcSaber; for a collector it is chiefly a Japan-market entry model of that period.

Authentication

Check the model name ArcSaber 2i and the item code ARC2I. Yonex Japan documents one color, Black/Orange, 3U only (average 88 g) with grips 5 and 6, made in Japan, 10 mm longer than standard, with a carbon frame containing cup-stacked carbon nanotube and a carbon shaft. A Black/Orange 3U frame marked Made in Taiwan or coded ARC4DX is the ArcSaber 4DX. Yonex Japan recommended 17–22 lb.

Outlook

A buyer should confirm the 2i name, the ARC2I code, the 3U label and the Japan marking in photographs, and be wary of strung “Light 2i” models or the 2024 ArcSaber 2 tiers sold under similar names.
