Carbonex 15 Long: the stiff, Japan-made Long Carbonex of Yonex’s 1999–2000 export catalogs

A Carbonex 15 with a Long suffix

The Carbonex 15 Long is known from two Yonex documents: a spec chart that the collector who scanned it dates to 1999, and page 14 of Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog. Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog had listed a plain Carbonex 15; both later documents list only the 15 Long, with no plain 15 beside it. The 2000 catalog gives it a full specification block: Stiff, high-modulus graphite in frame and shaft, 2U. Yonex prints no item code, price or launch date for it, and never says whether it continued or replaced the 15.

Stiff high-modulus graphite, made in Japan

The 2000 catalog tags it with the BTJ (built-in T-joint), BOX and Long icons and prints Flex Stiff, an H.M. Graphite frame and shaft, 2U (90–94 g) and grip sizes G2 to G5; Yonex recommends 16–18 lb for the mains and 18–20 lb for the crosses. The photo’s shaft print reads “Carbonex 15 LONG,” “HIGH MODULUS CARBON GRAPHITE” and “MADE IN JAPAN,” and the hoop carries “HIGH REPULSION POWER.” On both spec charts its flex mark sits one row below the stiff end, the row of the Carbonex 21 (and in 2000 the 23 and 10 Tour), and one row below the 20 Long, which the same catalog rates Extra Stiff. Yonex gives no length in millimeters, balance or player level.

No player on record

No Yonex source names a player using the Carbonex 15 Long. The catalog page it appears on carries a photograph of Indonesia’s Ricky Subagja, captioned with his name only; it does not say which racquet he holds.

One finish, and its namesakes

Yonex pictures one finish and names no color: a dark frame with gold-toned lines on the hoop, a dark shaft lettered in light script and a black grip. The plain Carbonex 15 of the 1996 catalog also has a high-modulus frame and shaft and a built-in T-joint, but is rated on a numeric scale with no weight class or flex word. The Carbonex 20 Long shares the materials, 2U class and Long tag but is rated Extra Stiff. On the same 2000 pages the Carbonex 21 prints an identical block without the Long tag. The 15, the 20 Long, the 21 and the chart-only Carbonex 7 Long each have their own page.

Export catalogs only, 1999–2000

The 15 Long appears only in Yonex’s Asian export documents. It is absent from Yonex USA’s Carbonex page of 1999, which listed the 22, 20 Long, 9 Tour and 8200; from Yonex Japan’s racquet list of April 2001; and from the Carbonex lists of Yonex’s international site in 2006–07 and its 2007 export catalog. Unlike the 10 Tour, 8 and 8600 on the same page, it carries no NEW tag in 2000. No Yonex price is documented in any currency, and 2000 is its last documented year. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Reading the shaft

No counterfeit of the Carbonex 15 Long is documented. The risk is identity. A frame or listing that reads only “Carbonex 15” may be the older 1996 model; in Yonex’s photo the word LONG follows the model number on the shaft in stylized capitals. The Carbonex 21 carries the same printed specification, and the Carbonex 20 Long the same suffix, so the number matters as much as the suffix.

A two-catalog Long

The 15 Long belongs to the run of Long models in Yonex’s late-1990s export range: the 1999 chart lists the Carbonex 20 Long and 7 Long and the Isometric 250 Long, 95 VF Long and 85 VF Long beside it. Of the Carbonex, it is the middle step: stiffer than the 7 Long, a step softer than the 20 Long. With two documents, one photograph and no Yonex Japan or Yonex USA record, it is among the thinly documented Carbonex models.

Authentication

Check the whole shaft print: Yonex’s 2000 catalog photo shows “Carbonex 15 LONG,” then “HIGH MODULUS CARBON GRAPHITE” and “MADE IN JAPAN,” with “HIGH REPULSION POWER” on the hoop. Yonex documents Stiff flex, a high-modulus graphite frame and shaft, a built-in T-joint, 2U (90–94 g) and grips G2 to G5. It documents no balance, length, item code or color name, and no weight class other than 2U, so those on a listing are the seller’s claims. A frame without LONG after the 15 is not this model. On a frame some 25 years old, check the T-joint, the hoop and the grommets for cracks.

Outlook

The Carbonex 15 Long suits collectors of Yonex’s late-1990s export Carbonex range and of its Long models. Confirm the full name and the MADE IN JAPAN print on the frame, photograph the markings, and treat any launch year, color name or player link as unsupported: Yonex documents the model only in 1999 and 2000 and names no player.
