Isometric 22 VF: the steel-shafted aluminum Isometric on Yonex’s 2008–12 list
Aluminum head, steel shaft
The Isometric 22 VF was the heavier and stiffer of the two adult racquets on Yonex’s international Isometric list from 2008: an aluminum Isometric head on a steel shaft, rated Stiff, in the U class (95.0–99.9 g) and made in China. Its listed build is the same as that of the Isometric 20 VF, which Yonex’s catalogs showed the year before, and Yonex never says whether the two are one frame under a new number.
What Yonex listed
Yonex’s international site first listed the 22 VF in February 2008, on an Isometric page that carried three racquets: the 24 VF, the 22 VF and the 22 JR. Its block gives Flex Stiff, an aluminum frame, a steel shaft, U (95.0–99.9 g) with a G4 grip, the Isometric head shape and Made in China. Yonex’s 2008 Badminton Catalogue prints the same frame, shaft, weight class and grip, rates it 1 for power and 2 for control, and gives its colors as red and turquoise. No Yonex document gives a balance point, a length, a string tension or a price.
No named player
Yonex names no player for the 22 VF and gives no playing level for it.
The same listed build as the 20 VF
Yonex’s 2007 catalog gives the Isometric 20 VF the same listed build: Stiff, aluminum on steel, U with a G4 grip, made in China. The 22 VF first appears in 2008, the year after that catalog showed the 20 VF, but Yonex never calls it a successor or a rename, and the catalogs show different colors (orange for the 20 VF in 2007). The Isometric 25DF, listed in 2007 with an aluminum frame, a steel shaft and the U class, is a third name with the same listed frame, shaft and weight. Beside the 22 VF stood the graphite-shafted 24 VF, Medium and 2U, and the 22 JR, a 2U junior racquet with a G5 grip.
Listed from 2008 to 2012
The 22 VF was an export model. No Yonex Japan listing of it is documented, and Yonex USA’s own Isometric page still named the 20 VF in 2007. The international list kept it, unchanged, through 2009 and 2010, and it was last listed there in March 2012. Yonex’s 2011 export catalog shows no Isometric racquets: its aluminum starters by then were Muscle Power and Carbonex models. No production end is documented, and the Isometric page on Yonex’s global site in 2020 listed only modern models. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Reading the number
No counterfeit of the Isometric 22 VF is documented. The risk is a mix-up of names: the 20 VF and 25DF share its listed frame, shaft and weight, so the “22 VF” printed on the frame is the check, and the 22 JR is a lighter junior racquet with a thinner G5 grip.
A short-lived number
The 22 VF belongs to a run of aluminum Isometric names that changed every few years: the 20 VF, the 25 DF and the 22 VF share one listed build. Its whole record is one web list, kept from 2008 to 2012, and one column of a 2008 catalog spec page.
Yonex documents the 22 VF as Stiff, U (95.0–99.9 g) with a G4 grip, an aluminum frame on a steel shaft, made in China; its 2008 catalog colors are red and turquoise. A graphite shaft or a 2U class points to the 24 VF, and a 2U class with a G5 grip to the 22 JR junior. Read the model number on the frame, since the 20 VF and 25DF share the listed build. On an aluminum frame, check the hoop for bends and the steel shaft for rust.
Confirm the “22 VF” print and the U weight before treating a frame as this model. Yonex documents no balance, length, tension or price for it, so a listing that quotes one is relying on another source. Expect ordinary club wear on an entry frame of this age.
