Isometric 85 VF Long: the long-frame 85 VF, rated a mark higher for power in 1999
The Long half of the 85
The Isometric 85 VF Long is the fourth of the VF columns on Yonex’s 1999 spec chart, the long-frame partner of the 85 VF under the shared heading “85.” Like the 85 VF, its whole Yonex record is three rating dots. The one mark that separates the pair is power: the Long version is rated a step higher.
Three ratings
On the chart’s five-mark scales the 85 VF Long sits at the second mark from the flexible end, level with the 85 VF and one softer than the 95 VF pair; at the middle mark for power, one above the 85 VF and level with the 95 VF Long; and at the middle mark for control, like every VF column. The chart gives no material, weight class, balance, made-in country or item code, and does not say how much longer the frame is. Yonex’s 2000 catalog explains VF as Vari-Frame for its 2000 models.
No named player
No Yonex source names a player for the 85 VF Long.
Two pairs on the chart
The chart pairs each VF number with a Long: the 95 VF and 95 VF Long rate one mark stiffer than the 85 pair, and in both pairs the Long rates one mark higher for power. The 85 VF has its own page. The 2000 catalog has no VF Long models; its 96 VF, 86 VF and 76 VF are not marked Long, and Yonex does not link them to the 85 pair. No photograph, color or edition is documented.
Only in 1999
The 1999 spec chart, a collector’s scan dated 1999, is the only Yonex document that names the 85 VF Long, so 1999 is its first and last documented year, not a launch or production-end date. Yonex USA’s 1999 Isometric page lists one Long, the 250 Long, and not this one, and the 2000 catalog’s chart drops it. No Yonex price is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Name and length
No counterfeit of the Isometric 85 VF Long is documented. The printed name is the only Yonex-based check: the word “Long” separates it from the 85 VF, whose ratings it shares except for power. As Yonex documents no length, a measured frame is no proof either way. Inspect the throat, hoop and grommets on a frame of this age.
A footnote to the 85 VF
The 85 VF Long is a one-column record, the long partner in the less stiff of the two VF pairs Yonex charted in 1999. The 2000 catalog’s Vari-Frame lineup has no Long model.
Yonex documents the 85 VF Long only as a column on its 1999 spec chart: flex as the 85 VF and one mark softer than the 95 VF Long, power one mark higher than the 85 VF, a middle control rating. No length, material, weight class, balance, color, item code or country of manufacture is documented. Look for “85 VF Long” in the frame print; a print without “Long” is the 85 VF. Treat further specifications as a seller’s claim, and inspect the throat, hoop and grommets on a frame this old.
The 85 VF Long interests a collector of the 1999 Isometric line. Its Yonex record is a single chart column, so confirm the full name, including “Long,” on the frame itself, and treat any other detail as the seller’s. Ask for photographs of the shaft print and the throat.
