Voltric 2 LD: the standard Voltric 2’s specs in the first Lin Dan Exclusive’s yellow

The Voltric 2, back in Lin Dan yellow

The Voltric 2 LD is the Lin Dan version of a racquet that had just left Yonex’s Voltric list. Yonex’s international site listed a standard Voltric 2 (item VT2, black/red) through 2014 and had dropped it by the end of January 2015, when the Voltric 1 took its place; the standard model has its own page. By late May the VT2LD was on sale in yellow in the first Lin Dan Exclusive collection. Yonex lists the same specifications as the standard Voltric 2: medium flex, a graphite and tungsten frame, an H.T. Graphite shaft, 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5, made in Taiwan. The product description is the Voltric 2’s word for word, quick racquet handling from a lightweight 4U frame with the Tri-Voltage System for powerful shots. On Yonex’s pages only the color and the LD marks differ.

The third racquet of the first Exclusive

Yonex announced the first Lin Dan Exclusive on April 2, 2015 for sale in mid-May, three months after Lin Dan’s return to the brand. The announcement named no racquet and promised details later. Yonex USA’s collection page, first archived on May 29, 2015, listed eleven products, three of them racquets: the yellow Voltric Z-Force II LD, the Voltric 8 LD and the Voltric 2 LD. Beside the 8 LD it is the plainer build. The 8 LD has high-modulus graphite in both frame and shaft and a stiff rating; the 2 LD has an H.T. Graphite shaft and a medium rating. Neither yellow Voltric is on Yonex Japan’s Lin Dan page of May 2015, which lists only the Japan-made Z-Force II LD among racquets.

A namesake, not a user

Yonex called the Exclusive “a limited edition line used by the King of Badminton himself,” every piece “uniquely designed for the two-time gold medallist, adorned with his custom ‘LD’ symbol.” The racquet of the line documented in his hands is the yellow Z-Force II LD. Yonex’s reports list Lin Dan with the standard Z-Force II at the March 2015 All England and his April 2015 Asia Championships win, and with the Z-Force II LD from the May 2015 Sudirman Cup; that racquet has its own page. No Yonex source shows him using the Voltric 2 LD.

One yellow finish

Yonex documents the 2 LD in yellow only; its plain counterpart, the Voltric 2, was black/red. Within the first collection, color does not separate the racquets. The 8 LD is also yellow, 4U and made in Taiwan, and the Japan-made Z-Force II LD shares the yellow in 3U and 4U. Lin Dan Exclusive II, announced in October 2015, brought new colors and two new Voltric LDs, the 7LD and the 1LD, which have their own pages. Yonex USA’s Exclusive II category, first archived on October 21, 2015, lists no yellow Voltric.

Listed by Yonex in 2015

Yonex USA’s product page for the 2 LD is archived only in 2015, on June 22 and September 19, and the collection page last on November 10, 2015. Yonex published no production end, so 2015 is the last year the 2 LD is documented on Yonex’s own pages. A US retailer’s pages still carried a listing for it in 2016 and 2018. No verified sales are recorded yet.

What listings get wrong

Retail listings describe the 2 LD as “medium stiff” and print a head-heavy balance point. Neither is Yonex’s: Yonex rates it medium and gives no balance. Because the 8 LD shares the color, weight class and factory, a yellow, Taiwan-made Voltric LD is identified by the model name on the frame, not by its paint. A black/red frame offered as a 2 LD is the standard Voltric 2, whose Yonex specifications match but which carries no Lin Dan marks.

The plainest of the 2015 yellows

The 2 LD was the lowest-specified racquet of the first Lin Dan Exclusive. It put the yellow and LD symbol of Lin Dan’s first season back with Yonex, the season of his Sudirman Cup title and his September 2015 Yonex Open Japan win, on the specifications of a 2014 Voltric. Across the Voltrics of the two 2015 collections it shares the medium rating with the 7LD, between the flexible 1LD and the stiff 8 LD and extra-stiff Z-Force II LDs. For a Lin Dan collector it completes the yellow set; for a player it is a 4U, medium-flex Voltric.

Authentication

Look for the item code VT2LD, the Made in Taiwan mark and Lin Dan’s LD marks on a yellow frame. Yonex listed it in 4U only (average 83 g), grips 4 and 5, and recommends 19–24 lb. The Voltric 8 LD shares the color, weight class and factory, so read the model name; Yonex offered a grip 3 only on the 8 LD. A Japan-made yellow frame in 3U or 4U is the Z-Force II LD, and a black/red VT2 without LD marks is the standard Voltric 2. Yonex rates the 2 LD medium, whatever a listing says. Yonex’s own checks apply: a laser-engraved code on the cone and a hologram sticker that resists lifting.

Outlook

A modest collection piece: Lin Dan’s 2015 yellow on the standard Voltric 2’s medium-flex, Taiwan-made specification. Check the VT2LD code before paying for a Lin Dan name, and treat any claim that he used one as unproven. There is no market reference yet, so judge a copy on condition. Ask for photographs of the frame, the cone and the grip-size label, and look for cracks and repainting.
