Voltric 20 DG: the 2018 addition to Yonex’s high-tension DG Voltrics

A Voltric 20 that came only as a DG

Yonex never sold a plain Voltric 20. Its Voltric lists of December 2012 (Yonex USA) and January 2013 (Yonex Japan), and its English-language lists of 2016, 2017 and 2020, show none; the racquet behind the name is the Voltric 20 DG, item VT20DG, the fourth of the original DG Voltrics and the only one of them added after 2016. Yonex lists it as stiff, 3U (average 88 g; Yonex UK gives 85–89.9 g), with a frame of high-modulus graphite, ULTRA HMG and tungsten, a high-modulus graphite shaft and a length 10 mm over standard, made in Taiwan. Yonex recommends 24–35 lb in 3U, the high-tension rating that defined the DG line. Like its siblings it was sold outside Japan; Yonex Japan never listed a DG Voltric. The Voltric 10 DG of 2016 is the line’s first stiff frame, and its page tells the story of the DG launch.

Spotted in a 2018 catalog

No Yonex source gives the 20 DG’s launch month. Its first dated trace is a BadmintonCentral post of March 27, 2018, by a member from Chennai who had found it in Yonex’s 2018 catalog for India: “Found a new racket - Voltric 20 DG launched.” Going by the specs, he wrote, it was “almost identical to the Voltric 10 DG”. Yonex’s English-language Voltric list showed all four DGs together by April 1, 2018, and the 20 DG’s own page there is captured from April 4. Yonex China listed it by August 2018, made in Taiwan, with a hard feel, the 10 mm extension, black and red color (187) and a suggested retail price of 680 yuan, against 550 for the 10 DG. Yonex gives no reason for adding a second stiff, compact-headed DG two years after the first.

No documented player

No professional player is documented with the 20 DG, and none of Yonex’s pages for it names one. The forum member who spotted it asked for reviews from anyone who had tested it. The racquet selector in Yonex’s 2018 catalog for India puts the 20 DG beside the 10 DG, well into the head-heavy half and clearly above the medium-flex 1 DG and 7 DG.

Nearly a 10 DG, in red or black and red

Yonex’s pages bear out the forum member’s reading. The 20 DG has the same stiff rating, weight class, frame and shaft materials and stringing advice as the 10 DG, and its technology list is the same: TRI-iBUMPER tungsten-infused grommets, a compact frame and a new grommet pattern on top of the Tri-Voltage System, Isometric head, AERO+BOX frame, built-in T-joint and Control Support Cap. The documented differences are the item code, the color and Yonex China’s price. Yonex’s English-language pages (2018 and 2020) and its India catalog showed the 20 DG in red; Yonex China (2018) and Yonex UK (2019) listed black and red, Yonex UK with grip 4 only. The 10 DG was also red on Yonex China in 2016. Yonex USA’s February 2019 catalog names the VT20DG only in its stringing-pattern guide, beside the VT10DG, while its Voltric spread shows the 10 DG and 1 DG.

A two-year run

The 20 DG has the shortest documented run of the four DGs, from early 2018 to 2020. No Yonex source states a production end. Yonex China’s Voltric list of February 2020 had already replaced the original DGs with DG Slim frames, while Yonex USA’s page still showed the red 20 DG that month and its Voltric list named all four DGs in July 2020. Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog lists only the 8 DG Slim and 21 DG Slim among DG frames, so 2020 is the last year Yonex is documented selling the 20 DG. No verified sales of the 20 DG are recorded yet.

Copies and mix-ups

No counterfeit specific to the 20 DG is documented. The likelier error is identity. A red frame may be either stiff DG, since both were sold in red with the same listed specification, so the model name on the frame and the item code, VT20DG against VT10DG, decide it. The Voltric 21 DG Slim is a different racquet with a medium feel, not a later 20 DG. The callout below lists Yonex’s documented details.

The last of the original DGs

No stiff, compact-headed DG followed the 20 DG. Yonex kept the label for slim-shafted frames: Yonex China listed the Voltric 21 DG Slim from April 2019 at the same 680-yuan suggested price and with the same 24–35 lb advice, but with a medium feel, and the 21 DG Slim reached Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog. No Yonex source calls it a replacement for the 20 DG. Its interest for a collector is its place as the last addition to the original DG line, the one with the shortest documented run, and as the real racquet behind the “Voltric 20” name; the 1 DG and 7 DG pages cover the medium-flex half of the line.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is VT20DG, and Yonex lists it as made in Taiwan. It came in 3U only (85–89.9 g, average 88 g), with grips 4 and 5 (Yonex UK listed grip 4), rated stiff, with a compact head and a length 10 mm over standard; Yonex recommends 24–35 lb. Yonex’s colors were red, and black and red. The 10 DG has the same listed specification and also came in red, so read the model name and the code; a medium-flex frame without the compact head is a 1 DG or 7 DG, and a slim-shafted frame named 21 DG Slim is a later model. Yonex’s own checks: the production code on the cap above the handle is laser-engraved, and the hologram sticker resists peeling.

Outlook

The 20 DG is a player’s racquet, a near-twin of the 10 DG documented on sale from 2018 to 2020 outside Japan. Confirm the VT20DG code and the 3U label in photographs, since a red stiff DG may be either model, make sure the color is red or black and red, and check the head and T-joint for cracks on frames that have been strung at high tension.
