Voltric 1 DG: a heavier, high-tension Voltric 1 that Yonex Japan never listed

A Voltric 1 in name only

The Voltric 1 DG reused the number of the Voltric 1 of 2015 for a different racquet. Yonex lists it as item VT1DG: 3U (average 88 g) where the Voltric 1 was 4U (average 83 g), medium flex where the Voltric 1 was flexible, with a frame of high-modulus graphite, ULTRA HMG and tungsten and a high-modulus graphite shaft. Like every DG Voltric it is listed as 10 mm longer than standard, and Yonex recommends 24–35 lb, a string tension few of its racquets were rated for. It was made in Taiwan and sold through Yonex’s companies and distributors in China, the US, India and elsewhere; Yonex Japan’s racquet pages never listed it. The Voltric 1 page covers the 2015 original, its pink Lee Chong Wei version and the other frames that share the number.

The third DG of 2016

Yonex China’s site carried the 10 DG and 7 DG from March 2016, and the 1 DG was on it by July 2016, first as item VT1DG in blue and by September as VT1DGEX. Its page repeated the line’s one-sentence pitch: the frame uses ultra-high-modulus carbon “to meet the demand for higher string tensions”. Yonex China classed it as a smash-type racquet for adults at its step-up (进阶级) level and set its suggested retail price at 400 yuan, the lowest of the three 2016 DG frames (the 7 DG was 470, the 10 DG 550). Its technology list is short: the Tri-Voltage System, an Isometric head, the AERO+BOX frame, a built-in T-joint and the Control Support Cap. The compact head and TRI-iBUMPER grommets went only to the 10 DG and 20 DG. Retailers and forum posters called the line “Durable Grade” from May 2016, and a coach’s 2021 review of the 10 DG repeats it, but no Yonex page spells out DG.

A flex label that changed

Yonex China’s 2016 page printed the shaft as stiff (硬). Its 2018 page says medium (中等), as do Yonex’s English-language page from 2018, Yonex’s 2018 catalog for India and Yonex USA’s 2019 catalog, so medium is the rating Yonex settled on. The 24–35 lb advice sat at the top of Yonex’s range: the same India and US catalogs gave it to every DG Voltric they listed, and also rated the Duora 8 XP up to 35 lb (20–35 lb). No professional player is documented with the Voltric 1 DG; none of Yonex’s pages for it names one.

Blue, orange, and black and blue

All colors share the one item code. Yonex China launched the 1 DG in blue (color 002) and by 2018 showed it in black and blue (188). Yonex’s English-language page, its 2018 India catalog and Yonex USA’s 2019 catalog show orange. Its siblings each have their own page: the 7 DG and the 10 DG of 2016 and the 20 DG of 2018. The 1 DG and 7 DG share a listed construction and technology list and differ in Yonex China’s price and in color; the 10 DG and 20 DG are rated stiff and carry the compact head.

Two years later in the US

Yonex USA came late to the DG line. Its Voltric list in 2016, 2017 and March 2018 shows none, and its 1 DG page appears in July 2018. Yonex USA’s February 2019 catalog printed the line as two racquets, the 1 DG and the 10 DG, and listed the orange 1 DG (item VT1DG, G5 grip) at $130, beside $135 for the 10 DG. That is a 2019 catalog price, nearly three years after the frame reached Yonex China, not a launch price. Examples also turn up in Japanese resale as imports, and some listings there call them simply “Voltric 1”. The verified sale shown above is a pre-owned frame from Asia resale.

Copies and mix-ups

No counterfeit specific to the Voltric 1 DG is documented. Yonex’s general checks apply: the production code on the cap above the handle is laser-engraved, and the hologram sticker resists peeling. The likelier error is identity. Sellers drop the suffix, so a frame listed as a “Voltric 1” may be the 4U original, its Lee Chong Wei version, the Voltric 1TR, the China-made 1LD or this 3U DG. The weight label and the item code settle it; the callout below lists the details.

End of the line

No Yonex source states a production end. Yonex China’s Voltric list of February 2020 had already dropped the four original DGs and linked the 2, 8, 11 and 21 DG Slim instead, slim-shaft frames on its site since 2019. Yonex USA’s product page for the 1 DG ran until mid-2020, and its Voltric list still named all four DGs in July 2020; its 2021 catalog lists only the 8 DG Slim and 21 DG Slim. Yonex UK also listed a 4U, hi-flex Voltric 0.1DG by 2018. No Yonex source calls any of them a successor to the 1 DG, and 2020 is the last year Yonex is documented selling it. Its interest for a collector is its place as the lowest-priced frame of Yonex China’s 2016 DG trio.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is VT1DG (Yonex China also printed VT1DGEX), and Yonex lists it as made in Taiwan. It came in 3U only (average 88 g), with grips 4 and 5 (G5 in Yonex USA’s 2019 catalog), rated medium flex and 10 mm longer than standard; Yonex recommends 24–35 lb. Yonex’s colors were blue (2016), orange, and black and blue (2018). A 4U frame in white and gold or white and red is the 2015 Voltric 1, a dark pink 4U frame is the Voltric 1 LCW (VT1LCW, from 2014) or the stiff Voltric Force LCW (VTFLCW), a 4U frame coded VT1TR is the 2016 Voltric 1TR, and a China-made 3U frame with Lin Dan’s LD marks is the Voltric 1LD. Yonex’s own checks: the production code on the cap above the handle is laser-engraved, and the hologram sticker resists peeling.

Outlook

The 1 DG is a player’s racquet: a 3U, medium-flex Voltric that Yonex rated for higher string tensions than most of its range, documented on sale from 2016 to 2020 outside Japan. Confirm the VT1DG code and the 3U label in photographs, since listings sometimes call it simply a Voltric 1, check that the color is one Yonex listed, and look for cracks at the head and T-joint on any frame that has been strung tight.
