Voltric 5FX: the flexible 4U Voltric that took the 5’s place and lasted to 2019

A flexible Voltric for developing players

The Voltric 5FX (item VT5FX) is the Hi-Flex, 4U Voltric that took the place of the plain Voltric 5 on Yonex’s international list in early 2017. Yonex pitched it in one line: “For the developing player, this model provides all-round power and control with enhanced shuttle feel.” It shares the number but not the build of the 5, a medium-flex 3U frame, and it outlasted it: Yonex’s international list dropped the 5FX by the end of March 2018, but Yonex UK kept it until December 2019. Yonex China and Yonex Poland wrote the name “Voltric 5 FX”.

Light Feel Carbon Neo

Yonex gives no launch date. Its international site shows the 5FX’s product page from February 2017, and the site’s Voltric list, which still carried the plain 5 and 7 on February 1, showed the 5FX and 7NEO instead on March 2. The frame is graphite, tungsten and what Yonex calls LIGHT Feel CARBON NEO; the shaft is high-modulus graphite; the racquet is 10 mm longer than standard and comes in 4U (average 83 g), with 19–24 lb recommended. Yonex UK explained the material: “Combining gum particles with carbon fibre generates a light feel and flexibility at impact.” Yonex China said the new lightweight carbon raised flexibility for easy attacking, and called the shaft extra soft (超软). Yonex’s 2017 catalog lists it with the Tri-Voltage System, Isometric, the Aero+Box frame and the built-in T-joint.

Aimed at developing players

Yonex names no player on the 5FX, and no player or limited edition of it appears in Yonex’s lists. Yonex Poland’s 2017 catalog called it an excellent option for ambitious players, and Yonex China classed it as an intermediate-level (进阶级), smash-type (扣杀型) racquet. The racquet selector in Yonex’s 2017 catalog shades it for “intermediate to advanced players with developing skills” and places it toward the soft-feeling end of its Voltric chart, on the head-heavy side.

White and lime, or white and red

Yonex’s own pages name two colors for item VT5FX: White/Lime on its international and US sites, and White/Red on Yonex UK, on Yonex China (color 114) and in the 2017 catalogs. Whether these were two designs or two names for one is not documented. The original Voltric 5 (VT5, 2011) is a different racquet: a medium-flex 3U frame of graphite and tungsten with a graphite shaft, which Yonex also listed in white and lime in 2015; it has its own page. The 5FX’s 2017 siblings were the medium-flex Voltric 7NEO and the Voltric 1TR. Light Feel Carbon had appeared before in the Japan-made Voltric 60 of 2011, and the later Astrox 5FX (AX5FX) is a different racquet in another series.

Into 2019 on Yonex UK’s list

The 5FX was a regular-production racquet for markets outside Japan; no Yonex Japan page for it is known. Yonex USA’s Voltric list showed it by May 2017, and Yonex China had a page for it by June 2017. Yonex’s international list dropped it by the end of March 2018, in the update that brought in the DG Voltrics. Yonex UK listed it by May 2017, kept it when the 5, 7, 7NEO and 1TR left its list in spring 2018, and still showed it on December 18, 2019; by January 8, 2020 it was gone. With no production end stated, 2019 is the last year it is documented on sale new. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Read the code

No counterfeit of the 5FX is documented, and the detailed Voltric counterfeit reports concern the tour-level Z-Force. The practical risk is identity. The plain Voltric 5 also came in white and lime, in 2015, so a white Voltric marked 5 needs its code and weight label read: VT5FX and 4U make the 5FX, VT5 and 3U the original. Yonex China’s page printed “3U (约83克)” beside 4U stringing advice; every other Yonex listing says 4U.

The flexible half of the 2017 pair

The 5FX belongs to the 2017 reshuffle of Yonex’s lower Voltrics, when the international list traded the 7 and 5 of 2011 for the 7NEO and 5FX. It was the flexible one of the pair, with Light Feel Carbon in a Taiwan-made frame, and on Yonex UK’s list it outlasted the 7NEO and the plain 5 by more than a year and a half. For a collector it is the 2017 bearer of the Voltric 5 number, built differently from the original.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is VT5FX (VT5FXEX on Yonex China). Yonex’s pages give Hi-Flex, 4U (80–84.9 g, average 83 g) with grips G3 to G5, a frame of graphite, tungsten and Light Feel Carbon Neo, a high-modulus graphite shaft and a length 10 mm over standard; Yonex recommends 19–24 lb, and Yonex China gives the origin as Taiwan. Yonex’s colors are White/Lime and White/Red. A 3U frame coded VT5 is the 2011 Voltric 5; a dark red, medium-flex 4U frame coded VT7NEO is the 7NEO. Yonex’s general counterfeit guide says the production code on the cap above the handle is laser-engraved rather than printed and the hologram sticker resists peeling.

Outlook

Read the code and the weight label first: VT5FX and 4U make this racquet, while a VT5 frame is the original 5, which also came in white and lime. Most surviving frames will have had club use, so check the head and the T-joint for cracks and look at the grommets and the butt cap. Yonex documents no player or edition of the 5FX, so treat any tour connection or special-edition claim as unproven without a Yonex source.
