Voltric 1TR: a high-modulus 4U Voltric that took the Voltric 1’s place in 2016

The Voltric 1, rebuilt

In February 2016 the Voltric 1TR took the Voltric 1’s place on Yonex’s international Voltric list: the list of February 4 still showed the 1, the list of March 5 showed the 1TR, and Yonex’s page for the new model is documented from February 14. The number stayed and the build changed. Yonex described the 1TR in one line, “Increased offensive power due to high-modulus graphite,” and gave it a high-modulus graphite frame and shaft, medium flex and 19–26 lb stringing advice, where the Voltric 1 had plain graphite, a flexible rating and 19–24 lb. Yonex China called it the Voltric 1 Tour and gave its origin as China; the Voltric 1 was made in Taiwan.

High-modulus graphite at 4U

Yonex’s page lists item VT1TR as medium flex, with an H.M. Graphite and tungsten frame, an H.M. Graphite shaft and 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5, and recommends 19–26 lb. Its technology list is the Tri-Voltage System, Isometric, the AERO+BOX frame and the Control Support Cap, which Yonex says gives an 88% wider flat surface than an ordinary racquet for easier gripping and fast follow-through. Yonex UK’s 2016 catalog adds tungsten and lists the frame as 10 mm longer than standard. Tri-Voltage was Yonex’s Voltric idea of placing weight at the top of the frame and at the joint to combine power with handling. Yonex’s 2018 catalog selector plots the 1TR on the head-heavy side of its balance axis, at about the same height as the Voltric 0F.

No player on record

No Yonex source ties a player to the Voltric 1TR, and Yonex gave it no player level. Its 2017 catalog printed it after the Voltric 7NEO and 5FX and before the Voltric 0F, the revised Voltric 0 that Yonex had pitched at entry players, and the Voltric Lite, which it described for beginners.

Silver/Red and White/Blue

Yonex listed the 1TR in Silver/Red and White/Blue under one item code; Yonex UK’s 2016 catalog shows Silver/Red only, and Yonex China sold both colors as VT1TRGE. No edition or revision of the 1TR is documented. Yonex China’s 2017 page titled it “VOLTRIC 1 TOUR”; Yonex’s English pages do not spell out “TR”. Several other racquets share the number, each with its own page: the flexible, Taiwan-made Voltric 1 of 2015 (VT1), its dark pink Lee Chong Wei version (VT1LCW), the 3U Voltric 1LD of Lin Dan Exclusive II and the 3U Voltric 1 DG (VT1DG) of 2016.

On the export lists, 2016–2020

The 1TR was sold outside Japan: Yonex’s international site, Yonex UK and Yonex China listed it, and no Yonex Japan listing is documented. Yonex USA’s 2019 and 2021 catalogs do not include it. Yonex’s 2017 and 2018 catalogs still printed it, and Yonex’s Voltric list showed it in July 2020, its last documented Yonex listing; the rebuilt list of September 2020 no longer did. No launch price is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Fakes and look-alikes

No counterfeit of the Voltric 1TR is documented. The risk is a mix-up within the family: sellers often drop suffixes, so a “Voltric 1” may be the 2015 original, its pink LCW version, the 1LD, the 1 DG or this model. The 1TR’s White/Blue scheme also matches the 2015 Voltric 0. The item code settles it, and the 4U label rules out the 3U 1LD and 1 DG.

Part of the 2016 reshuffle

The 1TR belongs to Yonex’s early-2016 reshuffle of its Voltric list, in which the Voltric 0 gave way to its 0F revision, the 50 Neo to the 50 E-tune, and the Voltric Lite and 8 E-tune joined. It has no player link or limited edition. Its interest for a collector is as the high-modulus step among the many racquets called Voltric 1.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is VT1TR (Yonex China: VT1TRGE). Yonex lists it as medium flex, 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5, with an H.M. Graphite and tungsten frame and an H.M. Graphite shaft, 10 mm longer than standard, in Silver/Red or White/Blue, and recommends 19–26 lb; Yonex China gives its origin as China. A White/Gold or White/Red 4U frame coded VT1 is the flexible, Taiwan-made Voltric 1; a 3U frame is the 1LD or the 1 DG; a White/Blue frame coded VT0 is the Voltric 0. Yonex’s own checks: a hologram sticker that resists peeling and a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle.

Outlook

A 4U export Voltric of 2016–2020 whose interest lies in its place among the many Voltric 1s. Confirm the VT1TR code and the 4U label in photographs, and treat a listing titled only “Voltric 1” with care. No player is documented with it. Check a played frame for cracks at the head and T-joint.
