Voltric 8 LD: the stiff yellow Voltric from Yonex’s first Lin Dan Exclusive line

The stiff Voltric of Lin Dan’s first collection

The Voltric 8 LD was one of three racquets in the first Lin Dan Exclusive, the limited line Yonex put on sale in mid-May 2015, months after he returned to the brand. It was the stiffer of the line’s two Taiwan-made yellow Voltrics, and its time on Yonex’s pages was short: Yonex USA’s page for it was online by May 1, 2015 and gone by early December. It also has no catalog parent. Yonex sold no standard Voltric 8 when it appeared, and the Voltric 8 E-tune that followed in 2016 is a separate listing, rated medium flex, that Yonex never links to the LD.

Stiff, 4U and made in Taiwan

Yonex announced the line on April 2, 2015 as “a limited edition line used by the King of Badminton himself,” every piece adorned with his custom “LD” symbol, and tied it to his goal of a third straight Olympic gold in Rio. By late May, Yonex USA’s collection page listed eleven products, three of them racquets: the yellow Voltric Z-Force II LD, the Voltric 8 LD and the Voltric 2 LD. The 8 LD’s page, item VT8LD, lists a high-modulus graphite and tungsten frame, a high-modulus graphite shaft, stiff flex, 4U (average 83 g) in grips 3 to 5, and stringing advice of 19–24 lb, made in Taiwan. It gives no description and no balance, only Yonex’s Voltric series overview of the Tri-Voltage System. The Z-Force II LD beside it was a different class of racquet: made in Japan, rated extra stiff, in 3U and 4U.

Lin Dan’s name, not his match racquet

Lin Dan signed with Yonex again in January 2015 after six years with Li-Ning, and the Exclusive line followed in May. The 8 LD carries his name and symbol, but no Yonex report puts it in his hands, or in any other player’s. Yonex’s reports list him on the standard Z-Force II in spring 2015 and on the Z-Force II LD from that May’s Sudirman Cup; the yellow LD has its own page. A Yonex report of the 2019 World Championships lists India’s B. Sai Praneeth with a Voltric 8 E-tune, a different model from the LD.

One color, and the later Voltric 8 E-tune

Yonex listed the 8 LD only in yellow. A Chinese retailer’s July 2015 description treats both yellow Voltrics as Taiwan-made versions of the Z-Force II LD’s livery and places the LD symbol on the 8 LD’s frame between 8 and 9 o’clock. The Voltric 2 LD, its sibling, is rated medium flex, has a high-tension graphite shaft and comes in grips 4 and 5 only. Yonex’s Voltric lists of December 2012 and January 2015 have no standard Voltric 8. By April 2016 Yonex had added the Voltric 8 E-tune, item VT8ETN, “equipped with the E-tune system”: also yellow, with the same listed frame and shaft materials and 4U (average 83 g) in grips 3 to 5, but rated medium flex, with stringing advice of 19–26 lb. Yonex never ties it to the 8 LD, so the LD can’t be described as a recolored E-tune.

Seven months on Yonex’s pages

Captures of the 8 LD’s Yonex USA page run from May 1, 2015, before the line went on sale, to November 3, 2015, with unchanged specifications; from December 4, 2015 the address returns “not found.” Yonex announced Lin Dan Exclusive II in October 2015, and its five racquets do not include either yellow Voltric. The 8 LD is not on Yonex Japan’s Lin Dan page, which lists only the Z-Force II LD among racquets. Yonex published no production end and no quantity beyond calling the line limited, so 2015 is the last year it is documented on sale new. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Counterfeits and mix-ups

No counterfeit of the 8 LD is documented. Mix-ups are the practical risk: the 2 LD shares its color, weight class and factory, the Voltric 8 E-tune shares its number, color and listed weights, and the Z-Force II LD shares the livery. Listings that call the 8 LD “medium stiff” are not quoting Yonex, whose page rates it stiff; Yonex’s medium rating belongs to the 2 LD and the 8 E-tune.

A one-season edition

Nothing on Yonex’s pages carries the 8 LD forward. Exclusive II’s lower Voltrics were the 7LD and 1LD, and by November 2016 Yonex’s Voltric list carried a further set of LD-named Voltrics (LD3, LD9, LD100 and LD200) beside the Voltric LD Force. No yellow reissue of the 8 LD is documented. It remains the stiff member of the 2015 yellow trio, documented by Yonex only through its own product page and the collection it sat in.

Authentication

Check the item code VT8LD and the Made in Taiwan mark. Yonex listed it in yellow, 4U only (average 83 g), grips 3 to 5, stiff flex. A Japan marking or a 3U label means a Voltric Z-Force II LD, the Japan-made flagship of the same collection. The Voltric 2 LD is also yellow, 4U and made in Taiwan, so read the model name on the frame rather than relying on color; Yonex offered a grip 3 only on the 8 LD. A yellow frame coded VT8ETN, with E-tune parts, is the 2016 Voltric 8 E-tune. Yonex’s own checks apply: a laser-engraved production code on the cone and a hologram sticker that resists lifting.

Outlook

Treat it as a Lin Dan collection piece, not as his racquet: a stiff, Taiwan-made Voltric in the 2015 Exclusive yellow. Confirm the VT8LD code and the 4U label in photographs, and be wary of listings that call it his match frame or blur it with the Japan-made Z-Force II LD or the later Voltric 8 E-tune. Ask for daylight photographs of the frame and the cone, and look for cracks and repainting.
