Isometric 400 Long: Yonex Japan’s turquoise all-carbon Long, retired with the 2000 range

A turquoise Long, first documented in 2000

The Isometric 400 Long is known from one Yonex Japan product page and the old-model lists that followed it. Item ISO400L sat in Yonex Japan’s 2000 range as an all-carbon, 3U-only Long frame in turquoise, a color the page called new. That label suggests an earlier finish, and perhaps an earlier start, but no earlier Yonex listing is documented, so 2000 is its first documented year. It was not on Yonex Japan’s April 2001 lineup, and Yonex Japan filed it with its 2000 models.

Top-light, with a supple shaft

Yonex Japan’s page lists an all-carbon frame and an all-carbon shaft, one weight, 3U, in grip sizes 4 and 5, and a full racquet case with the frame. Its copy promises a wide sweet spot that meets the shuttle at a high, far contact point for more attacking power, and a top-light design (トップライト設計, Yonex’s word for head-light) with a supple shaft. Yonex Japan used “Long” for frames 10 mm longer than its 664 mm regular size, as its 2001 lineup put it for the Ti 10; the 400 Long’s page prints no length. Yonex recommends 14–16 lb for the mains and 16–18 lb for the crosses, with BG65 for hard hitters and BG85 for control players. No stiffness word, balance figure or country of manufacture is given.

No player on record

No player is documented using the Isometric 400 Long, and Yonex Japan’s page names none. Yonex tied other Isometric frames of the period to players, such as Gong Zhichao’s Swing Power 900 at the 1998 Japan Open and, on Yonex Japan’s staff pages of 2003–05, the Ti Swing Power.

Turquoise, shared with the Pro 700 Long

Yonex Japan documented one design, turquoise (color 161), flagged as a new color, and no edition. The same turquoise appears on the Isometric Pro 700 Long, item ISOP700, which Yonex Japan retired with it, and the two pages share the all-carbon build and the 3U recommended tensions. The Pro 700 Long was a different model, sold at ¥18,000 in 3U and 2U with copy promising a wider sweet spot and 20% more rebound; it has its own page. The navy Isometric 300 Long, marked new in April 2001, followed at ¥14,000; Yonex never calls it a successor.

¥15,000, one documented season

Yonex Japan’s list price was ¥15,000 before tax for the frame with a full racquet case, below the Isometric Swing Power 500 at ¥16,000 and the Pro 700 Long at ¥18,000. By April 2001 Yonex Japan’s “Products ’00” archive listed just those three Isometrics, and its old-model index of 2002–08 filed the 400 Long with the 2000 models. Yonex Japan kept the page online into 2008, without its price by 2005. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Telling it from its relatives

No counterfeit of the Isometric 400 Long is documented. The confusions are with relatives: the turquoise Pro 700 Long of the same build, the navy 300 Long of 2001, and the Swing Power 500, sold in four types (SX, SS, SR and SA). Yonex Japan’s page title spells the name アイソメトリックス, “Isometrics”, so a search in Japanese may need both spellings.

At the turn to titanium

The 400 Long belongs to a changeover in Yonex Japan’s Isometric line. Its 2000 companions included the new Ti Swing Power, with a titanium-mesh frame, and the Isometric 750 Muscle, built with the Muscle Power Frame, and both outlasted it. The plain all-carbon Long carried on for one more season in the navy 300 Long.

Authentication

Yonex Japan’s specification for the Isometric 400 Long: item code ISO400L; turquoise (161); all-carbon frame and all-carbon shaft; 3U only, grip size 4 or 5; Long size; top-light (head-light) design with a supple shaft; sold as a frame with a full racquet case. Yonex prints no country of manufacture for it. The Isometric Pro 700 Long shares the turquoise and the build, so read the printed model name, and note that a 2U frame is not a 400 Long. How the name appears on the frame is not documented. On a frame about 25 years old, check the joint, the grommets and the hoop for cracks.

Outlook

The Isometric 400 Long is a small piece of Yonex Japan’s 2000 range with a clear Yonex record: item code, list price, color, weight and stringing. The open question is its start: the “new color” on its only product page implies an earlier finish that no Yonex source shows. Treat a 400 Long in another color as undocumented rather than fake, and look for a dated purchase record with it.
