Muscle Power 30: Yonex Japan’s last carbon Muscle Power, a slim-shafted head-light frame
The Muscle Power that outlived the line
The Muscle Power 30 arrived in Japan in 2008, after Yonex Japan’s other carbon Muscle Powers had ended production by 2007, and it stayed on Yonex Japan’s racquet list until the end of 2010. Yonex pitched it at beginner and intermediate players: “sharp rebound from the Muscle Power frame” and a very slim shaft that gives the shuttle good carry. It was a Japan-market model: Yonex’s international Muscle Power lists of 2008–10 never carried it.
Carbon, a slim shaft and a T-joint
Yonex Japan’s 2008–09 catalog announced the MP-30 for February 2008 at ¥14,000 before tax (¥14,700 with tax), made in Japan. It listed a full-carbon frame and shaft with a built-in T-joint, 3U in grips 5 and 6, and a recommended 17–22 lb, with BG65 for hard hitters and BG68TI for control players. The 2009 catalog called the frame and shaft simply carbon and repeated the price. Yonex’s spec charts of 2008–10 draw its balance on the head-light side, and the 2010 chart lists it as 10 mm long. Yonex Japan printed no flex rating.
No player on record
No player is documented using the Muscle Power 30. Yonex marked it for beginner and intermediate men and women, and named no player on it.
Magenta, then white and blue
The launch design was magenta (Yonex color 327). The 2009 catalog offered white/blue (207) beside the magenta, and Yonex Japan’s old-model index files the model in both its 2009 and 2010 production-end groups. Yonex USA had listed a different racquet named Muscle Power-30 in 2004–06: a Medium-flex export model with a graphite frame and high-modulus graphite shaft, sold years before this one’s Japanese launch and documented with no link to it.
Three seasons in Japan
The MP-30 is in Yonex Japan’s 2008–09 and 2009 catalogs and its 2010 spec chart, and on Yonex Japan’s racquet list in October and December 2010; by March 2011 the list no longer showed it. The old-model index places its production end in 2010. Yonex sold it only in Japan, where its last catalog price was ¥14,000 before tax. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Copies and markings
No counterfeit of this model is documented. The main risk is confusion with the export Muscle Power-30 of 2004–06 and with Yonex’s later aluminum Muscle Powers with single-digit numbers, which are different frames.
The end of carbon Muscle Power in Japan
With the MP-30’s production end in 2010, Yonex Japan’s carbon Muscle Power line closed; the Muscle Powers in Yonex’s 2011 export catalog were aluminum starters. For a collector it is the last Japanese chapter of a series that began with the MP-100 in 2000.
Look for the MP-30 name, a 3U label with a G5 or G6 grip (Yonex Japan’s sizes), and a made-in-Japan marking. Yonex documented two designs: magenta (327) and white/blue (207). Yonex lists a carbon frame and shaft with a built-in T-joint; an aluminum frame is a different, later Muscle Power. Yonex Japan sold a dedicated grommet set (AC416MPA) and supplied the frame with a full-length case. Yonex recommends 17–22 lb.
An inexpensive Japan-only frame, but the last carbon Muscle Power Yonex Japan made, which gives it some interest for series collectors. Check the design against the two Yonex colors, the 3U label and the Japanese markings, and make sure a listing isn’t the unrelated 2004–06 export Muscle Power-30.
