Muscle Power 45: a soft-grommet intermediate frame from the Muscle Power line’s last years

Rebound, control and a softer feel

Yonex Japan introduced the Muscle Power 45 in 2006 as a Muscle Power for intermediate players who value rebound and control. Its page named one feature no other lower Muscle Power listed: soft continuous grommets, which Yonex said reduced unpleasant vibration for a softer feel at impact. It arrived as the line was shrinking, and it is the only one of Yonex Japan’s late lower-tier Muscle Powers that Yonex also listed in English, rated Medium flex.

Carbon, a T-joint and soft grommets

Yonex Japan’s MP-45 page carried a “NEW” tag by October 2006; the racquet list of April 2006 did not show it, and the list of December 2006 did. No on-sale date is documented, so 2006 is the earliest Yonex-documented year. Yonex listed a high-modulus carbon frame, an all-carbon shaft and a built-in T-joint, in 3U with grip 5 or 6, recommending 17–22 lb with BG65TI for hard hitters and BG68TI for control players. It said the Muscle Power Frame gave a stable string bed and a sharp rebound. The price was ¥18,900 including tax (¥18,000 before tax), with a soft case, and the frame was marked made in Japan.

No player on record

No Yonex source names a player on the MP-45. Yonex pitched it at intermediate players, and no professional use of it is documented.

One design, two listings

Yonex sold the MP-45 in a single design, white/Venus blue (Yonex color 331). Its English-language Muscle Power list of May 2007 carried only two models, the Muscle Power 99 and the 45, rating the 45 Medium flex with a graphite frame and shaft, 3U (85.0–89.9 g) in grips 3 to 5, made in Japan. Yonex’s 2007 English-language catalog tagged it NEW in the same white/Venus blue and printed “10mm LONG” beside it. The grip sets differ between the two markets; the code, name, color and 3U class match, so it is one racquet. The earlier export list of February 2007 had carried a Flexible Muscle Power-44 instead.

Japan and the English-language list

On Yonex Japan’s racquet list the MP-45 sat below the MP-60 and beside the student MP-40, taking the place the intermediate MP-50 had held until 2004. Yonex’s English-language Muscle Power list showed it from May 2007 and still did in July 2007, the last documented version of that list. Yonex Japan lists the MP-45 among the models whose production ended in 2007, with the MP-90, MP-80 and MP-40, so it was on sale for little more than a year. An unused frame today is old stock about twenty years old. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Copies and lookalikes

No counterfeit of the MP-45 is documented. Identity is the more useful check: it is the only white/Venus blue Muscle Power on Yonex’s lists. The MP-60, also white, is white/silver with an Ultimum Ti shaft; the MP-40 is red and the MP-50 blue, Sapphire Blue or Ruby Red. A frame named Muscle Power 44 is a different, Flexible export model.

A short run at the end of the line

The MP-45 came late in the Muscle Power line’s Japanese run, and its production ended in 2007 with most of the remaining Japan Muscle Powers; only the Muscle Power 30 of 2008–10 came later, and it has its own page. Yonex named no successor. Its soft continuous grommets and Medium rating set it apart from the other lower Muscle Powers, which Yonex Japan described by rebound and durability alone.

Authentication

Look for a white/Venus blue frame (Yonex color 331) named Muscle Power 45, item code MP-45, made in Japan, in 3U. Yonex Japan offered grips 5 and 6 and its English-language list grips 3 to 5. Yonex listed a high-modulus carbon (graphite) frame, an all-carbon shaft with a built-in T-joint and soft continuous grommets, rated it Medium flex, and recommended 17–22 lb. It published no balance. On a frame about twenty years old, check the grommets, the T-joint and the grip for cracks and repairs.

Outlook

The MP-45 is an intermediate Muscle Power from the line’s final years, sold in Japan from 2006 and on Yonex’s English-language list in 2007, with production ending in 2007. With no player on record, its interest lies in its short run and its soft-grommet design. Confirm the white/Venus blue color, the 3U size and the made-in-Japan marking, and inspect an old frame closely.
