Muscle Power 50: Yonex Japan’s intermediate Muscle Power, in blue, sapphire or ruby
The intermediate rung
Yonex Japan described the Muscle Power 50 in one line as the Muscle Power series model for intermediate players. It was the third Muscle Power on Yonex Japan’s list, after the MP-100 and MP-70, and the cheapest of them, carrying the series’ Muscle Power Frame without the continuous eyelets and Ultimum Ti shaft of the MP-70. Yonex Japan sold it from 2001 to 2004 in two designs: a blue launch frame and, from 2003, a choice of Sapphire Blue or Ruby Red.
A carbon frame with the Muscle Power bead
Yonex Japan’s MP-50 page carried a “NEW!!” tag by 19 August 2001; the racquet list of 2 June 2001 did not show it, and the list of October 2001 did. No on-sale date is documented, so 2001 is the earliest Yonex-documented year. Yonex listed a high-modulus carbon frame with a carbon shaft, in 3U with grip 4 or 5, at ¥19,000 with a soft case, and said the Muscle Power Frame raised smash and drive speed by 3%, with little tension loss and a quick rebound. Yonex’s Muscle Power feature page explained the frame as a string-contact surface raised into a half-round, so that frame and string act as one. The later old-model page lists the shaft as all-carbon with a built-in T-joint.
No player on record
No Yonex source names a player on the MP-50. Yonex Japan’s copy speaks only of intermediate players. The series’ documented professional users, such as Taufik Hidayat on the MP-70, played its higher frames.
Blue, then Sapphire Blue or Ruby Red
The launch design was blue (Yonex color 002), with Yonex recommending BG75TI for hard hitters and BG88TI for control players. By April 2003 Yonex Japan’s page showed two new colors, Sapphire Blue (329) and Ruby Red (338), with BG65 Power replacing BG75TI as the hard hitter’s string; the frame specifications on the page were unchanged. Yonex Japan’s old-model index files the blue design under 2002 and the Sapphire Blue and Ruby Red design under 2004. The old-model page for the later design lists a 2U class beside the 3U, both in grips 4 and 5, with Yonex recommending 17–22 lb for 3U and 18–23 lb for 2U, and marks it made in Japan.
Four seasons on Japan’s list
The MP-50 appears only on Yonex Japan’s lists; no export listing under this name is documented. Yonex USA’s Muscle Power page first listed a Muscle Power-55 in December 2002 and last listed it in October 2003, beside the 100, 88 and 77: a 2U (90–94 g) frame in grip G4, rated Stiff, with the Muscle Power frame and a built-in T-joint but no Ultimum Ti, much as Yonex Japan describes the MP-50’s all-carbon shaft. Yonex never calls the two one racquet, and the listings differ: Yonex Japan’s MP-50 pages of 2001–03 give 3U only, and only the old-model page for its later design adds a 2U. It stayed on Yonex Japan’s racquet index through December 2004, below the MP-60 and beside the newer MP-40, and was gone by September 2005. Yonex Japan’s old-model index places the Sapphire Blue and Ruby Red design in its 2004 group, the year production ended. An unused frame today is old stock more than twenty years old. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Copies and lookalikes
No counterfeit of the MP-50 is documented. Identity is the more useful check: Yonex Japan’s other Muscle Powers of 2001–04 came in different colors (the red MP-100, the yellow MP-90, the silver or Midnight Purple MP-70, the white/silver MP-60 and, from 2004, the red MP-40). The later MP-45 is white and Venus blue.
Replaced in the lineup, not by name
Yonex named no successor to the MP-50. After it left the list, Yonex Japan’s intermediate Muscle Power slot was filled from 2006 by the MP-45, which Yonex also described as a model for intermediate players. The MP-50 remains the simplest frame of the first Muscle Power generation: a carbon frame with the Muscle Power bead and no titanium.
Look for a frame named Muscle Power 50 (item code MP-50) in blue (Yonex color 002), Sapphire Blue (329) or Ruby Red (338). Yonex Japan listed a high-modulus carbon frame with a carbon shaft (all-carbon with a built-in T-joint on its later page), 3U in grip 4 or 5 and, for the later design, also 2U in grip 4 or 5, and marked it made in Japan. It published no flex, balance or gram weight. On a frame more than twenty years old, check the grommets, the T-joint and the grip for cracks and repairs, and check that the color matches one of Yonex’s three.
The MP-50 is the intermediate frame of Yonex Japan’s first Muscle Power generation, sold from 2001 to its 2004 production end. With no player on record, its interest lies in its place in the line and its three colors. Confirm the color against Yonex’s list, the 3U or 2U size and the made-in-Japan marking, and inspect an old frame for cracks and replaced grommets.
