Muscle Power 40: Yonex Japan’s head-light Muscle Power for students who train hard
Built for the practice hall
Yonex Japan described the Muscle Power 40 as a model for students who practice a lot: a Muscle Power Frame with good rebound and high durability, and a head-light design that swings through easily and handles well. At ¥17,000 before tax it was the lowest-priced Muscle Power on Yonex Japan’s list. It joined the list in 2004 beside the intermediate MP-50 and stayed until 2007.
Carbon, a T-joint and a head-light balance
The MP-40 appeared on Yonex Japan’s racquet list with a “NEW” tag in September 2004; the lists of April and June 2004 did not show it. No on-sale date is documented, so 2004 is the earliest Yonex-documented year. Yonex listed a high-modulus carbon frame, an all-carbon shaft and a built-in T-joint, in 3U with grip 4 or 5, recommending 17–22 lb with BG65 Power for hard hitters and BG88TI for control players. The price was ¥17,850 including tax (¥17,000 before tax), with a soft case. Yonex printed no flex or gram weight, and listed no Ultimum Ti in the shaft.
No player on record
No Yonex source names a player on the MP-40. Yonex Japan aimed it at students, not at its professional staff, whose documented Muscle Powers were the series’ higher frames.
One red frame
Yonex Japan sold the MP-40 in a single design, red (Yonex color 001), with no player or limited edition documented. At the same time Yonex’s export list carried a Muscle Power-44, rated Flexible, with a high-modulus graphite frame and shaft, in 3U with grips 4 and 5, made in Japan. The two share a weight class and grips, but no Yonex source says they are one racquet, and Yonex Japan gave the MP-40 no flex word, so they are best treated as separate listings.
Three years on Japan’s list
The MP-40 sat beside the MP-50 and below the MP-60 on Yonex Japan’s list in late 2004, outlasted the MP-50, and from late 2006 sat beside the MP-45. It appears only on Yonex Japan’s lists. It was still on Yonex Japan’s list in April 2007, and Yonex Japan lists it among the models whose production ended in 2007, with the MP-90, MP-80 and MP-45. An unused frame today is old stock about twenty years old. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Copies and lookalikes
No counterfeit of the MP-40 is documented. Identity is the more useful check. Red also ran on the MP-50 (Ruby Red) and on the MP-100, the series’ top frame. The MP-45 is white and Venus blue in grips 5 and 6, and the MP-50 blue, Sapphire Blue or Ruby Red. A frame named Muscle Power 44 is the export listing.
The student’s Muscle Power
The MP-40 gave Yonex Japan’s Muscle Power line a durable, head-light student frame in its later years, when Yonex’s top frames had moved to the Armortec and Nanospeed lines; the line’s last Japanese model, the Muscle Power 30 of 2008–10, has its own page. Yonex named no successor. Its production ended in 2007 with the MP-90, MP-80 and MP-45; the MP-100 and MP-60 had ended in 2006.
Look for a red frame (Yonex color 001) named Muscle Power 40, item code MP-40, made in Japan, in 3U with grip 4 or 5. Yonex Japan listed a high-modulus carbon frame, an all-carbon shaft with a built-in T-joint and a head-light design, recommended 17–22 lb, and published no flex or gram weight. A frame named Muscle Power 44 is Yonex’s export listing, not this model. On a frame about twenty years old, check the grommets, the T-joint and the grip for cracks and repairs.
The MP-40 is the student model of Yonex Japan’s Muscle Power line, sold from 2004 to its 2007 production end in one red design. With no player on record, its interest lies in its place as the line’s lowest-priced and head-light frame. Confirm the red color, the 3U size and the made-in-Japan marking, treat a Muscle Power 44 as a separate listing, and inspect an old frame closely.
