Voltric 1LD: a heavier, China-made Voltric 1 for Lin Dan Exclusive II

A Voltric 1 in name, not in build

The Voltric 1LD carries the standard Voltric 1’s name, flex rating and product description, but not its weight class or factory. Yonex lists it as item VT1LD: flexible, with a graphite and tungsten frame and a graphite shaft, 3U (average 88 g) in grips 4 and 5, made in China, in white and bright red. Yonex UK’s 2015 brochure lists the standard Voltric 1 (VT1) as 4U (average 83 g) and made in Taiwan. The description is the Voltric 1’s word for word: quick racquet handling, with the Tri-Voltage System for powerful, stable shots. That sets it apart within its collection. The Voltric 7LD keeps the standard Voltric 7’s 4U class and Taiwan factory, and the Z-Force II LD is the Japan-made Z-Force II in a new finish.

The flexible Voltric of Lin Dan Exclusive II

Yonex announced Lin Dan Exclusive II on October 15, 2015, a month after his Yonex Open Japan title, his first there in nine years, and said the second round of limited gear would be on sale worldwide in late November. The announcement named one racquet, a custom Lin Dan Voltric Z-Force II. The Exclusive II category on Yonex’s international site went further, and earlier: its first archived capture, on October 21, 2015, already lists five racquets among 29 products, the Z-Force II LD, the Voltric 7LD, the Voltric 1LD and the Nanoray 9000LD and 7000LD, which have their own pages. Of the three Voltrics, the 1LD is the one Yonex rates flexible; the 7LD is medium and the Z-Force II LD extra stiff. The 1LD is not on Yonex Japan’s Lin Dan page, which lists only the Z-Force II LD among racquets.

A collection piece, not a match frame

Yonex ties the lower Lin Dan Exclusive racquets to him through the collection’s name and his LD symbol, which the 1LD carries. No Yonex source shows Lin Dan using the 1LD. The racquet documented in his hands in this period is the Exclusive II Z-Force II LD, which Yonex’s report linked to his sixth All England title in March 2016 and which has its own page. The Lin Dan name on the 1LD comes from the collection, not from his play.

Five racquets called Voltric 1

Several Yonex racquets share the number. The dark pink Voltric 1 LCW (VT1LCW), a 4U frame, came with Yonex’s Lee Chong Wei limited-edition gear from August 2014; it has its own page. The standard Voltric 1 (VT1, white/gold or white/red, 4U, made in Taiwan) took the Voltric 2’s place on Yonex’s international Voltric list in January 2015 and stayed on Yonex’s lists into early 2016. The 1LD followed in late 2015. In 2016 came the Voltric 1TR, which replaced the Voltric 1 on that list, and the Voltric 1 DG (VT1DG), a 3U, medium-flex frame. The 1LD is the only Lin Dan design among them. Yonex lists its colors as white and bright red, the two colors of the Exclusive II Z-Force II LD, and no other 1LD finish is documented.

Listed into 2017, with no recorded sales

The 1LD’s product page on Yonex’s international site is archived from November 17, 2015 to December 28, 2016, and the Exclusive II category still listed it, with the 7LD and the two Nanoray LDs, on January 13, 2017. By May 12, 2017 the category held only three string products: every racquet had gone. Yonex published no production end, so 2017 is the last year the 1LD is documented on sale new. No verified sales of the 1LD are recorded yet.

Mix-ups under the Lin Dan name

Because Yonex gave the 1LD the Voltric 1’s description word for word, copied product text proves nothing about which racquet is for sale. A listing titled “Voltric 1 Lin Dan” can be a standard white Voltric 1, which is 4U and made in Taiwan; the weight label and the factory mark separate them. A 3U label alone does not settle it either, since the Voltric 1 DG is also 3U. The other Exclusive II Voltrics in bright red are stiffer racquets: the Japan-made Z-Force II LD, rated extra stiff, and the Taiwan-made 7LD, rated medium and listed in navy blue and bright red.

The only flexible Voltric of the LD collections

Of the Voltrics in Yonex’s two 2015 Lin Dan Exclusive collections, the 1LD is the only one Yonex rates flexible. The first collection’s Voltric 2 LD is medium, its Voltric 8 LD stiff and its yellow Z-Force II LD extra stiff. After Exclusive II, Lin Dan’s next signature racquet was the Voltric LD Force of 2016, which has its own pages. For a collector of the Exclusive II set, the 1LD is the entry-level Voltric and the one that strays furthest from the standard model whose name it carries. Its documented history rests on the pages of Yonex’s international site.

Authentication

Check the item code VT1LD, the 3U weight label (average 88 g, grip 4 or 5) and the Made in China mark. Yonex lists the colors as white and bright red, with Lin Dan’s LD marks. A 4U, Taiwan-made white frame without LD marks is the standard Voltric 1; a dark pink 4U frame is the Voltric 1 LCW (VT1LCW) or the stiff Voltric Force LCW (VTFLCW); a 3U frame coded VT1DG, orange in Yonex’s listing, is the Voltric 1 DG. A Japan marking means a Z-Force II LD, and a 4U, Taiwan-made LD frame in navy blue and bright red is the Voltric 7LD. Yonex recommends 19–24 lb. Yonex’s own checks apply: a laser-engraved code on the cone and a hologram sticker that resists lifting.

Outlook

A Lin Dan Exclusive II piece on a flexible, China-made 3U frame, not a racquet he played. Confirm the VT1LD code, the 3U label and the Made in China mark in photographs, since a standard Voltric 1 can be listed under the Lin Dan name. There is no market reference yet, so judge a copy on condition and completeness. Ask for daylight photographs of the frame and the cone, and look for cracks and repainting.
