Voltric 0: the China-made bottom rung of the Voltric line, later sold as the 0F

A Voltric for entry players

The Voltric 0 was the bottom rung of Yonex’s export Voltric range, and Yonex said so in its one-line description: “TRI-VOLTAGE SYSTEM provides good handling and power for entry players.” It first appears on Yonex’s international Voltric list at the end of January 2015, together with the new Voltric 1, and in Yonex UK’s 2015 brochure it was the only one of ten Voltrics made in China. In February 2016 Yonex replaced it with the Voltric 0F (item VT0F), which kept the frame, shaft, weight class and stringing advice and added a TFA cap. As the 0F it stayed in Yonex’s catalogs into 2021.

Tri-Voltage in a graphite frame

Yonex’s 2015 page lists item VT0 as flexible, with a graphite and tungsten frame, a graphite shaft, 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5, White/Blue, made in China. Its technology tab named only the Tri-Voltage System and Isometric. Tri-Voltage was the Voltric idea: extra weight at the top of a frame had traditionally added power at the cost of handling, and Yonex balanced the weight at the top of the frame and at the joint, with thin frame sides. Isometric squares the head so that strings of each direction run at similar lengths, enlarging the sweet spot. Yonex lists the frame 10 mm longer than standard and recommends 19–24 lb. Its 2018 catalog selector plots the 0F on the head-heavy side of its balance axis, less than halfway toward the head-heavy end.

No player on record

No Yonex source ties a player to the Voltric 0. Yonex pitched it at beginners, and the player names of those years went on other low-numbered Voltrics: Lee Chong Wei’s on the pink Voltric 1 LCW and Lin Dan’s on the Voltric 1LD, each with its own page.

White/Blue, then the 0F

Two item codes carry the name. The VT0 of 2015 came in White/Blue. Between Yonex’s international Voltric lists of February 4 and March 5, 2016 it gave way to the Voltric 0F (VT0F), first in Blue, with a new description: “Allows for powerful shots with a mild feeling equipped with the TFA CAP.” Yonex says the TFA cap adds shaft flex to speed the frame’s recovery after impact, damps vibration and fits the thumb. The rest of the published specification did not change, though Yonex’s flex label moved from Flexible to Hi-Flex by its 2017 catalog. A Black/Red 0F followed, shown by Yonex UK in November 2018 and in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog. No Yonex source explains the “F”. The same reshuffle replaced the Voltric 1 with the Voltric 1TR and added the Voltric Lite; both have their own pages.

Export only, into 2021

The Voltric 0 was sold outside Japan: Yonex’s international site, Yonex UK and Yonex China listed it, and no Yonex Japan listing is documented. Yonex China sold the 0F as VT0FGE and gave its origin as China. Yonex USA’s 2019 catalog listed the 0F at $90 MSRP, and its 2021 catalog sold it pre-strung at $105, the same prices as the Voltric Lite beside it; Yonex UK’s 2020 page gave an RRP of £50. The 0F was still on Yonex’s Voltric list in July 2020, and the 2021 catalog is its last documented Yonex listing. No launch price is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Fakes and look-alikes

No counterfeit of the Voltric 0 is documented. The likelier confusion is with its 4U neighbors. In Yonex USA’s 2019 and 2021 catalogs the Voltric Lite (VTLT) shares the 0F’s frame, shaft, length, weight and stringing advice, but its technology list has no TFA cap. The flexible Voltric 1 of 2015 is Taiwan-made, and the medium-flex Voltric 1TR comes in White/Blue, the original VT0’s colors. The Voltric 0.1 DG that Yonex UK listed from 2018 to 2019, also a 4U hi-flex frame, is a different racquet; it has its own page. So is the Voltric Ace (VT-ACE) of 2018, whose catalog specification matches the 0F’s but whose technology list names a Control Support Cap in place of the TFA cap; it has its own page.

A beginner’s frame with a long run

The Voltric 0 is a mass-market beginner’s racquet with no player link and no limited edition. Its interest for a collector lies in its place at the foot of the Voltric line: the only China-made Voltric in Yonex UK’s 2015 range and, as the 0F, one of six Voltrics left in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog.

Authentication

Yonex’s item codes are VT0 (2015, White/Blue) and VT0F (from 2016, Blue, later Black/Red); Yonex China’s code for the 0F is VT0FGE. Yonex lists both as flexible (Hi-Flex on later 0F listings), 4U (average 83 g), with a graphite and tungsten frame and a graphite shaft, 10 mm longer than standard, made in China, and recommends 19–24 lb. A 0F should have the TFA cap Yonex names in its description. A 3U frame is not a Voltric 0. A frame coded VTLT is the Voltric Lite, VT1 the Taiwan-made Voltric 1 and VT1TR the medium-flex Voltric 1TR. Yonex’s own checks: a hologram sticker that resists peeling and a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle.

Outlook

An entry-level export Voltric that Yonex sold from 2015 into 2021, first as the 0 and then as the 0F. Confirm the item code, the 4U label and, on a 0F, the TFA cap in photographs, since the 0F, the Voltric Lite and the 1TR overlap in looks and weight. No player is documented with it. Check a played frame for cracks at the head and T-joint.
