Voltric 21 DG Slim: the medium-flex, compact-headed top of Yonex’s DG Slim line

The dearest of the DG Slims

The Voltric 21 DG Slim (Yonex item VT21DGSL; VT21DGSLEX in China, VT21DG in Yonex USA’s catalog) was the highest-priced of the four DG Slim Voltrics that Yonex China launched in April 2019. It kept the DG line’s high-tension rating, 24–35 lb in 3U, and put it on a slim shaft with a medium flex. Of the two DG Slims in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog it is the one with the compact head and TRI-iBUMPER grommets, which the cheaper, flexible 8 DG Slim lacks. Despite the number, it is not a later version of the Voltric 20 DG.

Launched in China, April 2019

Yonex China’s page titles it “VOLTRIC 21 DG SLIM (2019年4月上市)”, launched April 2019, and lists it as made in Taiwan, 10 mm longer than standard, medium feel (中等), 3U (about 88 g) with grips 4 and 5. Yonex’s pages and its 2021 US catalog give a frame of high-modulus graphite, ULTRA HMG and tungsten, a high-modulus graphite shaft and a built-in T-joint; Yonex recommends 24–35 lb. The catalog’s technology line names the Tri-Voltage System, TRI-iBUMPER, Isometric, Compact Frame, New Grommet Pattern, AERO+BOX Frame, Tungsten, Slim Shaft and Control Support Cap. Yonex UK spelled out the letters: “Durable Grade uses a thicker frame with more inner-frame supports to create a strengthened head.”

No player on record

No player is documented with the 21 DG Slim, and none of Yonex’s pages for it names one or lists an edition of it. Yonex UK pitched it as “an ultra attacking racket for heavy smashing with the option of higher tensions if you want improved control,” and added a caution about that rating: “only the best players with consistent hitting action should consider a tension this high.”

One color, three siblings

Yonex listed one design, Dark Gun (深枪灰 in China, color 277). Its siblings each have their own page: the 11 DG Slim, also rated medium, and the flexible 8 DG Slim and 2 DG Slim, all four 3U and 10 mm longer than standard. The Voltric 20 DG of 2018 is a different racquet, rated stiff, although Yonex China gave the two the same suggested price. No Yonex source calls the 21 DG Slim a successor to any of the original 1, 7, 10 and 20 DG.

On Yonex’s lists, 2019–2021

The 21 DG Slim was sold outside Japan; no Yonex Japan page for it is known. After the April 2019 launch in China, Yonex UK’s Voltric list first showed it at the end of December 2019, with the 8 DG Slim. Yonex’s international site did not list it on its old Voltric pages in January or July 2020; its rebuilt list showed all four DG Slims in September and November 2020, and by June 2021 no DG racquet remained there. Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog still listed it at $140, a catalog price two years after launch rather than a launch price. With no production end stated, 2021 is the last year it is documented on sale new. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Mix-ups more than fakes

No counterfeit of the 21 DG Slim is documented. The likelier error is identity, because its name sits next to the 20 DG’s: the 20 DG is rated stiff and came in red or in black and red, while the 21 DG Slim is medium flex in Dark Gun. Within the DG Slim line the 11 shares the medium flex, so the number on the frame and the item code decide it.

The DG name’s last stop

The 21 DG Slim and the 8 DG Slim are the last DG Voltrics documented on sale: the only DG frames in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog, which carried neither the original DGs nor the 2 and 11 DG Slim. For a collector the 21 is the top of that final phase, the highest-priced DG Slim, with a medium flex and a compact head like the stiff 10 DG and 20 DG.

Authentication

Yonex’s item codes are VT21DGSL (international site), VT21DGSLEX (China), VT21DG (Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog) and 21DGS (Yonex UK); Yonex China lists it as made in Taiwan. It came in 3U only (85–89.9 g, average 88 g) with grips 4 and 5, rated medium flex, 10 mm longer than standard, with a compact head; Yonex recommends 24–35 lb. Yonex listed one color, Dark Gun. A cyan frame named 8 DG Slim is its flexible sibling, and a stiff frame coded VT20DG in red or black and red is the 20 DG. Yonex’s general checks: the production code on the cap above the handle is laser-engraved, and the hologram sticker resists peeling.

Outlook

Confirm the 21 DG Slim name, the VT21DG code and the 3U label in photographs, and expect the Dark Gun finish, the only color Yonex listed. Yonex documents no player or edition of it, so treat any tour connection or rare-variant claim as unproven. A frame rated for 35 lb may have been strung very tight: check the head, the grommets and the T-joint for cracks.
