Voltric 8 DG Slim: the flexible, cyan member of Yonex’s high-tension DG Slim line
A flexible DG
The Voltric 8 DG Slim (Yonex item VT8DGSL; VT8DGSLEX in China, VT8DG in Yonex USA’s catalog, VT8DGS in Yonex UK) is the cyan member of the DG Slim line that Yonex China launched in April 2019. It paired the DG line’s high-tension rating, 24–35 lb in 3U, with a flexible slim shaft, unlike the four original DGs, which Yonex rated medium or stiff. With the 21 DG Slim it is one of only two DG racquets in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog.
Launched in China, April 2019
Yonex China’s page titles it “VOLTRIC 8 DG SLIM (2019年4月上市)”, launched April 2019, and lists it as made in Taiwan, 10 mm longer than standard, soft feel (软), 3U (about 88 g) with grips 4 and 5, in blue-green (蓝绿, color 470). Yonex’s pages and its 2021 US catalog give a frame of high-modulus graphite, ULTRA HMG and tungsten and a high-modulus graphite shaft; Yonex recommends 24–35 lb. The catalog’s technology line names the Tri-Voltage System, Isometric, New Grommet Pattern, AERO+BOX Frame, Tungsten, Slim Shaft and Control Support Cap, without the compact frame and TRI-iBUMPER it lists for the 21 DG Slim. Yonex UK spelled out the letters: “Durable Grade uses a thicker frame with more inner-frame supports to create a strengthened head.”
A flex label that disagrees, and no player
Yonex’s international page and its 2021 US catalog rate the 8 DG Slim Hi-Flex, and Yonex China calls its feel soft; Yonex UK’s page alone prints “Flex: STIFF”, against that majority. Yonex UK used the same pitch as for the 21 DG Slim, “an ultra attacking racket for heavy smashing with the option of higher tensions if you want improved control.” No player is documented with the 8 DG Slim, and none of Yonex’s pages for it names one or lists an edition of it.
One color, and other 8s
Yonex listed one design, Cyan. Of the four DG Slims, Yonex China priced the 2 lowest, then the 8, the 11 and the 21; the 2 is the other flexible one, and the 11 and 21 are rated medium. Each has its own page. Two older racquets share the number: the Voltric 8 E-Tune (VT8ETN, 2016), a 4U frame, and the Voltric 8 LD, a Lin Dan edition. The Voltric 0.1 DG that Yonex UK listed from 2018, a 4U Hi-Flex frame, was the first flexible DG; it has its own page.
On Yonex’s lists, 2019–2021
The 8 DG Slim was sold outside Japan; no Yonex Japan page for it is known. After the April 2019 launch in China, Yonex UK’s Voltric list first showed it at the end of December 2019, with the 21 DG Slim. Yonex’s international site did not list it on its old Voltric pages in January or July 2020; its rebuilt list showed all four DG Slims in September and November 2020, and by June 2021 no DG racquet remained there. Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog still listed it at $135, a catalog price two years after launch rather than a launch price. With no production end stated, 2021 is the last year it is documented on sale new. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Mix-ups more than fakes
No counterfeit of the 8 DG Slim is documented. The likelier error is identity: a frame sold as a “Voltric 8” may be the 4U 8 E-Tune, the 8 LD or this 3U DG Slim, and the 2 DG Slim shares its flexible rating. The model name on the frame, the weight label and the item code decide it.
The flexible end of the DG name
The 8 DG Slim and the 21 DG Slim are the last DG Voltrics documented on sale: the only DG frames in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog, which carried neither the original DGs nor the 2 and 11 DG Slim. For a collector the 8 is the flexible half of that final pair, a 3U Hi-Flex frame rated for the same high tensions as the stiff DGs.
Yonex’s item codes are VT8DGSL (international site), VT8DGSLEX (China), VT8DG (Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog) and VT8DGS (Yonex UK); Yonex China lists it as made in Taiwan. It came in 3U only (85–89.9 g, average 88 g) with grips 4 and 5, rated Hi-Flex (Yonex UK’s page alone says stiff), 10 mm longer than standard; Yonex recommends 24–35 lb. Yonex listed one color, Cyan. A 4U frame coded VT8ETN is the 8 E-Tune, and a Dark Gun frame named 21 DG Slim is its medium-flex sibling. Yonex’s general checks: the production code on the cap above the handle is laser-engraved, and the hologram sticker resists peeling.
Confirm the 8 DG Slim name, the VT8DG code and the 3U label in photographs, since “Voltric 8” covers three different racquets, and expect the cyan finish, the only color Yonex listed. Yonex documents no player or edition of it. A frame rated for 35 lb may have been strung very tight: check the head, the grommets and the T-joint for cracks.
